The Black Keys: Post #5

The First Time I Heard The Black Keys
Madeline Rose

The first time I heard The Black Keys, I was in eighth or ninth grade. I am blessed to have the same taste in music as my dad (usually). He played their song "Little Black Submarines" for me in the car. This song is from their El Camino album. I was immediately drawn into the unique style of The Black Keys. I wasn't even able to put a label on what genre of music they are. Not only is this song one of the most well known songs by the The Black Keys, the song is a great representation of the duo. If I were to introduce a friend to The Black Keys I would highly consider having them listen to this song first. Many people describe their music style as indie/garage/blues rock. The song starts off more slow and melancholy, but then the tempo speeds up and it's evident why they're considered a rock duo. The first time I listened to the song, I didn't pay as much attention to the lyrics. The lyrics of the song are still very confusing to me, but it's evidently about a girl and heartbreak. This makes sense because Dan Auerbach divorced his wife in 2013, and this album was released in December of 2011 possibly around the time he recognized his marital issues.
