Death Cab for Cutie
By Anne Marie Adams
Death Cab for Cutie is an indie rock, indie pop, and alternative rock band from Bellingham, Washington- a bayside college town. The band was started by Ben Gibbard, a singer and guitarist, who, at the time, was a student at Western Washington University. He was dividing his time between his studies and his passion for music. Gibbard was originally in a local power pop band called Pinwheel, but in 1997 took a break from this band to begin working on a solo album. His first cassette, You Can Play These Songs with Chords, became a local hit. At that point, Gibbard turned to friends to put together a band.
Bassist Nick Harmer, Gibbard’s roommate, and drummer Nathan Good joined the band. Another man named Chris Walla joined as a guitarist. Their first album, Something About Airplanes, was released in 1998. Nathan Good left the band in 2000 and was replaced by a new drummer named Michael Schorr. Another drummer, Jason McGerr, joined that band in 2003. In 2014, Chris Walla decided to leave the group.
Gibbard writes most of Death Cab for Cutie’s songs. Their eighth album will be released in March 2015.The band was named after a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.
