Why Joan Jett?
By: Christina Serra
My first introduction to Joan Jett was about three years ago when my family and I were headed up north for the summer. On the way up all we listened to was Kesha, Katy Perry, Usher and many more artists on billboard 100. My parents soon became tired of all this edited and cliché music. My mom said "hey let me show you my jam back in the day" seconds later she played "I Love Rock N Roll" by Joan Jett and my dad and her busted out in song for the next three minutes. From that moment on I never forgot that feeling that song gave me a sense of urgency to get up and dance!
Joan Jett has that fearless attitude where she believes no one can stand in her way. I really look up to her based on how much pride she puts into her work and how much she believes in herself based on many obstacles she was faced with. Whether it was a record deal falling through, her band not getting a gig, or her band breaking up for the time being. Joan never lost faith in herself and that is why she is declared the queen of Rock N Roll.
Joan being the sonly girl in Joan and the Blackhearts she never lost sight of her feminist pride. She showed woman how they can sing just as loud as men, sell out stadiums, and be just as big of a public figure. Joan definitely has rough side to her which she portrays in her music and what she wears but that is the kind of edge you need in music to draw the audience in. Her rough and tough attitude sold out stadiums, broke billboard records, and represented women everywhere.
Although Joan doesn't come to Detroit that often when I'm in California this summer I hope to see her when she performs at the House of Blues for a reunion tour!
