TRAIN
By: Allie Perez
Train is a pop/alternative rock band from San Francisco,
California. They formed in 1993 when lead vocalist Pat Monahan moved to
California and joined Rob Hotchkiss (guitar), and Jimmy Stafford (guitar) who
were previously members of a band called the Apostles. Other original members
include Scott Underwood (drums) and Charlie Colin (bass guitar).
The band first achieved national recognition in 1998 with their self-titled album, Train,
including hit single “Meet Virginia”. In 2001, they released multi-platinum
album, Drops of Jupiter. The hit
single, “Drops of Jupiter” went on to win two Grammys in 2002.
In 2003, members Rob Hotchkiss and Charlie Colin decided to
leave the band to pursue solo careers and for personal reasons. In 2006,
the band decided to take a break from music to spend time with friends and
family. They still continued to work on songwriting over the break.
The band re-entered the music scene in 2009 with “Hey, Soul
Sister” which became the most downloaded iTunes song of 2010, and won a Grammy
Award in 2011. This song came from their fifth studio album Save Me, San Francisco, which featured
hit songs “If It’s Love” and “Marry Me”.
In 2012, the band released singles, “Drive By”, “50 Ways to
Say Goodbye”, and “Bruises”, as well as their next album, California 37. In
2014, Scott Underwood announced he would be leaving the band and replaced by
Drew Shoals. Also that year Train released Bulletproof
Picasso which featured hit single “Angel in Blue Jeans”. (included below)
