The Black Keys
Madeline Rose- February 7th
The Black Keys are a rock duo that has been active since 2001. Their music is described as indie rock, garage rock, and blues rock. Dan Auerbach is the guitarist/vocalist and Patrick Carney is the drummer. The two are childhood friends who grew up in Akron, Ohio. The two began playing music together in high school.
In college Dan Auerbach tried playing at local bars with little success. That's when the two dropped out of college and decided to form a band. The duo signed with Alive in 2002 which lead to their first album The Big Come Up. Their first album is described by many as "raw blues rock."
Slowly but surely The Black Keys have gained a huge fan base and noteworthy success. They have eight albums. They have won six Grammy Awards, one MTV Video Music Award, and a BRIT Award along with countless nominations. Auerbach writes songs for The Black Keys and in 2009 he did some solo work.
The band has controversy with The White Stripes frontman Jack White who has repeatedly criticized the band on everything from their name to their "unoriginality." White has been known to say that "there would be know Black Keys without the Stripes."
