The Black Keys: Post #4

All You Ever Wanted

Madeline Rose

I have many favorite songs from The Black Keys, but currently my favorite song by them is a very short, yet beautifully written song called “All You Ever Wanted.” It is from their album Attack and Release. I think what I like most about this song is how it makes me feel. The song gives a nostalgic feel which seems to be a quality of music that I’m attracted to. The timbre is mellow during most of the song, which gives me time to think about the lyrics. The dynamics change from mezzo piano to forte, but I think this is characteristic of The Black Keys, and something about their music that I love.

The lyrics of this song really make me think. It’s a song that has many different interpretations. In my opinion it’s about a girl who was previously in an abusive relationship who’s trying to move on and love herself, but the effects of the abuse are interfering with her relationships, until she meets a new guy who wants to show her what love really means. Even though the song is short, Patrick Carney wrote the lyrics so symbolically that they could easily be mistaken for a poem if they were just written down.

"You see him out your window
Even when you close the blinds
And all you ever wanted
Was someone to treat you nice and kind"
