Tim McGraw: Post #4

Southern Girl

By: Sophie Groves

There is not one Tim McGraw song I can turn on and not like; all of his music is so unique and applies to many aspects in my life. Perhaps my most favorite Tim McGraw song is "Southern Girl" from his album Two Lanes of Freedom. Off of his 2013 album came many of his most famous singles like "Highway Don't Care", "One of Those Nights", and "Truck Yeah". Anytime this song comes on the radio, or is randomly selected on my Country Music Playlist I always break out into song (I feel bad for all of those around me).

I am a Southern girl at heart. I have family down South in Alabama who I visit every summer. I enjoy Sweet Tea like a Southerner, I dress like a Southerner, I own a few pairs of cowboy boots, and I know how to speak my mind like the lovely Southerners do. The list goes on and on. If I had to choose where I lived, it would be in the South. I often joke with my family and tell them I wasn't born in the right half of the United States. Who I am is important to me and important to understanding why I love this song. It is almost like Tim McGraw wrote this one for me.

I love how the song speaks to me. It exudes a bright, warm, and shiny timbre. The rhythm of "Southern Girl" is so exciting, it makes me want to jump on a truck and start dancing with everyone. It is just one of those songs you can turn on in the dead of Winter and realize Spring is on its way, and instantly your day is turned around for the best.

I love the lyrics of the song because I think they are so creative. Each of the lines embodies a particular part of southern culture, which makes it the best to listen to. Listening to the lyrics almost teleports me back to Alabama, where I consider my second home to be.

"Kisses sweeter than Tupelo honey
Little bit crazy like New Orleans
Memphis blue and Daytona sunny
Soft as cotton in some cut-off jeans
Don't you know,
Ain't nothing in the whole wide world
Like a southern girl"

"Southern girl rock my world
Hazel eyes and golden curls
Put on a country song
We'll dance all night long"

The last part of the chorus where Tim is echoing in the back is my favorite part of the song, and is always stuck in my head. I love it because nothing beats a summer night with country music blasting and all your friends dancing around together. "Southern Girl" instantly takes me back to the South in a matter of 4 minutes.
